Last Seen Headed Towards the Slithering Depths

Katrina Constance had never seen much outside of the greenhouses, let alone the academy walls of the Apothecary’s guild. Now, finally, she was out on her first guild contract... she just didn’t know it would take her so far away from home.

She sat in a cart with other students from the guild who, much like her, had just achieved the journeyman’s rank, which permitted them contracts. It had been at least a whole day since they headed in god-knows-which direction, and no one had bothered to say a word to each other. Outside the cart, the wind was wailing harder than Katrina had ever experienced. It was loud enough to drown out the hoofs of the cattle pulling the cart across a poorly made road.

When the wagon finally stopped, Katrina muttered to herself before quickly stretching and walking to the back of the wagon. She was hoping the wagon had come to some kind of shelter. But upon opening the flap, the guild master stood before her, and behind him, an open prairie with hardly a tree to be seen.

“Looks like we have our volunteer for our 1st ecological survey sight,” the quirky old man said, taking Katrina’s hand and pulling her out into the open.

She looked around in confusion. “Isn’t this a botanical samples gathering?” she asked impishly.

“Correct! This is one of many entry points I’ll be dropping you and those other journeymen off at to enter the subterranean anomaly. On the other side of the wagon, you’ll see a way to make it into the 'Slithering Depths.'” the guild master replied. He handed her a sealed scroll. “Collect samples that match these descriptions and be back out here by sundown.”

“How can I tell if I’m underground?”

“The plants will glow,” he answered as he returned to the front of the wagon. He shoved off, leaving Katrina confused in the foreign land.

She made her way toward what looked like a small grotto, definitely not big enough to walk through. It blew a warm, moist breeze and held a faint shine at the back of it. After crawling through a tight space, Katrina found herself inside an illuminated hallway of glowing flowers and fauna that led to a spring pool. She was struck with awe. She never knew such a beautiful thing could exist in this world. She walked slowly to the edge of the pool and continued to marvel at the space she was in until she found her shoe stuck to the floor.

Katrina looked down in disappointment as she pulled her foot free, and without warning, she found herself lifted into the air as something much larger, much slimier, grabbed her from behind. Just as unexpectantly, Katrina was suddenly pinned beneath folds of heavy flesh that stuck to her face, her wrists clasped firmly, pinning her in place. She kicked her legs to try and shake free from her assailant but a large tail wrapped around them and bound them together. As Katrina was subdued, her arms were brought to her side and she was brought face to face with her assailant-- a voluptuous woman with the body of a slug.

The mysterious creature brought Katrina close and kissed her deeply, filling her mouth and throat with toxic mucus. Katrina felt herself go limp in the slug woman’s tight embrace. A smug smile grew upon the slug woman’s face before it opened unnaturally wide, ready to swallow her whole.
